How to Soothe a Baby That Struggles to Settle Down

There are many potential reasons why a baby might struggle to settle down and might be a little fussy when it comes to sleeping or even simply not crying. Getting to the bottom of the problem is often a challenge. If there’s nothing obvious that’s causing your baby’s distress, there are some ideas and options you might want to try. Those are what we’re going to discuss today, so read on to find out more.

Try Offering a Soothing Massage

First of all, you might want to try offering the baby a soothing massage. Some babies are known to respond well to stroking and gently massaging their muscles. If you’ve never tried it before, give it a go and see if it makes a difference. That direct, skin-on-skin contact between you and the baby can also be a very positive thing and might just yield the results you’re looking for.

Check the Fit and Temperature of the Clothes They’re Wearing

It’s also a good idea to check common issues that might be causing the issue, even if you hadn’t considered them before. One example of this relates to the clothes that they’re wearing. If the clothing has a fit that’s a little too tight or the clothes are too warm and think for the time of year, you might want to do something about that. This discomfort might be the source of the problem.

Choose the Right Soft Blankets

Having the right blankets in place and choosing the ones that offer the best feeling on the skin for your baby might help them relax faster and easier. There are lots of great cotton baby blankets out there to choose from. You might also want to try swaddling the baby. When done right and done carefully, this can offer security and easier relaxation for your child.

Find the Pattern of Movement That Helps Them Calm Down

Movement is a big factor in calming down a baby in many cases. There are all kinds of examples of how this works. Some parents find that taking their baby for a ride in the car is a sure fire way to calm them down because of the movement that it involves. Rocking baskets can have a similar effect; you just need to find the pattern of movement that best helps your baby calm down and relax.

Try White Noise

Sounds can also help your baby to calm down. In many cases, it’s sounds that you don’t expect. Not all babies need complete silence in order to sleep and relax. Some parents find that the noise from vacuum cleaners help their baby calm down. And white noise machines are also commonly used by parents.

When you baby just won’t seem to settle down, it can be challenging. You want him or her to be comfortable and to feel at ease, but making that happen is often easier said than done. So be sure to make the most of the tips and ideas that we’ve discussed here and go from there.
