5 Tips to feel more confident and self-sufficient.

Do you want to feel more confident and self sufficient? Sometime its is hard to feel more confident. We’re heading for uncertain times right now. Those of us who tend towards worrying excessively may be finding it hard to stay positive and confident. Don’t give into feelings of despair and helplessness, though, because you can make a difference, in your live and in the lives of people around you by becoming a can-do, more practical person.

Here’s some easy steps you can take to feel more empowered, more able and, ultimately, more confident.

Learn some DIY skills

We’re far too reliant on services! While it’s convenient and trouble-free to phone up a plumber to fix your heating, how about you find out how to bleed a radiator? It’ll save you the call-out fee and when winter rolls around again, you can give yourself an easy heat boost!

Grow your own vegetables

This is great fun, as well as immensely satisfying when you pry your bounty out of the earth or pull it off its vines. You don’t have to have acres of land to do this, either. If you’re a big herb fan, then a windowsill or two will do nicely, or you can get some compost bags and grow your own tomatoes.

Get fitter and stronger

As humans, our bodies are meant to work, to be strong and to move a lot! A big component of depression, anxiety and feelings of helplessness is being unfit or not getting enough exercise. Our bodies feel weak, we worry about our weight and our hearts, or we’re simply too inactive. Getting out for a walk every day, doing some squats, grabbing a couple of cans of beans and doing some bicep reps or, indeed, signing up to a running programme works wonders. A stronger body means a stronger mind.

Help someone who’s less fortunate

Of course, you can send a few euros to a distant charity – and so you should – but nothing beats getting out into your local community and making an immediate difference to someone’s life. It could be volunteering in a soup kitchen, or running errands for a housebound neighbour, or offering to take someone to a few hospital appointments. If it stops you thinking about your own circumstances for a few hours and makes you feel useful, it can’t be bad, right?

Learn how to make do and mend

That sinking feeling you get when you see a frayed seam in a favourite dress really is a downer. You could try to find a replacement, but that might be an expensive and fruitless search. So, instead of binning the dress, or consigning it to the “I’ll get around to it one day” drawer, bust out that old sewing machine or your sewing kit and just get on with fixing it. Learning to make and mend clothes is a really useful skill and it’s often in demand, especially if it turns out you have a bit of a gift for it.
