What to expect on the 20 week scan

What to expect on the 20 week scan

It was finally time for our 20 week scan. Despite this being my 3rd child, I wasn’t sure what to expect on the 20 week scan.

I was so excited to see our baby again but obviously a little anxious.

We were also taking our girls with us to our 20 week scan. Taking siblings to this special milestone is such a good idea. It is a great way for them to be a little more involved. They were so excited although, admittedly, they did think they were going to see a new born baby come out of Mummy’s tummy. Their presence also made me a little more nervous in case there were any problems.

It was a bit of a stressful morning. We were all really tired, little things kept going wrong.

There was a delay when we got to the hospital. I guess I was just worried though. I needn’t have been, everything was just fine. The heartbeat and the measurements were all fine. I was a little conscious that I hadn’t felt much movement from the baby other than the odd flutter. I know it is still only early days but with both my girls I felt a lot of movement so early. The midwife informed me that there was nothing to worry about though.

The baby was such a live wire.  We were there for ages whilst the midwife tried to get some pictures for us but the baby would just not stay still!! It’s funny because whenever I am in the hospital for a check up with my midwife or a scan I just can’t believe I am doing it all again. I sometimes think it’s a little crazy but I am excited – so very excited. We all are.

So the next time we see our baby will be when it’s born eek – half way there! Oh and, if you’re wondering if we found out the gender, you may want a little read of my finding out post.

Have you taken siblings to your 20 week scan?

  1. So glad everything went well, I cant believe you are half way already! You’re so patient not finding out, we found out with all five, I just couldn’t stand the wait!! Love the photo of the girls holding the scan, whether this baby is another girl or a little boy, they are going to be so loved aren’t they? #KCACOLS

  2. Oh I’m so excited for you all – I remember the 20 week scan so clearly, being really nervous about it too! I’m glad it’s all going well and hope you are feeling well too…our baby was a livewire and it’s so entertaining to watch on the ultrasound! Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday xx

  3. Lovely! We have three – 2 girls and the youngest a boy. We couldn’t take the girls to the scan as they wouldn’t allow it but I remember them being so excited! Hope all continues to go well xx #KCACOLS

  4. That 20 week scan always makes it seem so real and close. Glad everything’s going well. Bet your girls are excited!

  5. I remember always being so worried when it was time for an ultrasound-I think that’s just mom nature haha. So cool to hear you’re not finding out the gender, I think that’s what I’m going to do when we decide to have another little one! It must be so exciting, yet so weird haha. I’m so happy to hear that everything is going perfectly <3 #KCACOLS

  6. I’m glad that the midwife reassured you that everything was fine-your girls must’ve been ecstatic to be there!! The 20 week scan is such a big milestone! I hope that the rest of your pregnancy runs smoothly, I’ll be watching out for an announcement of whether you’ve had a boy or a girl!!

  7. That picture of your girls with the scan photo is lovely. So glad everything went well and hiw exciting you’re half way through xx #mg

  8. So glad to hear that baby and you are healthy and baby is so active how cute! It is such a reassuring moment isn’t it!!! I was always so nervous but excited before my scans. We found out with both our girls. With Aspen I had had 2 miscarriages before her so I think I wanted to know because I never got to know what they were. I also was really hoping for a girl so I couldn’t believe it when they said I was expecting a girl. Again we found out with our 2nd pregnancy and I love knowing and talking to Aspen about her baby sister. But with our 3rd pregnancy I decided I wanted to be surprised. People assumed we wanted abby, but honestly we didn’t. We had always said we’d have 3 girls for some reason and so we wee happy to have another girl or a boy. I actually felt I bonded differently to the baby because of not knowing. I felt I loved it just for it, rather than as my daughter or son. I felt a very powerful connection. When the baby was born I asked not to be told and as they handed me my newborn I saw him in all his glory. Strangely I wasn’t even surprised it was like I had been waiting my entire life to meet him. We hadn’t decided on a girls name it was to be either Claire or Eve. I liked Eve best, hubby preferred Claire, but for abby it was always going to be Noah. But when I saw him his name came to me, he was not Noah. It was a very surreal moment and I was instantly in love. Our bond is still incredibly strong too. So if I could do it again, if I had a fourth baby I would not find out, it just enriched the experience for me. Oh and by the way my mum went crazy and came in with so many new baby boy clothes lol.

Congrats honey, so thrilled for you!!! And the pictures of your girls with the scan are adorable #mg

  9. I read this wondering ‘ooh, is it going to be a boy or a girl’, then clicked over to your other post to find out and was so disappointed, haha! We found out what we were having with both of ours, but I do like the idea of not knowing. Maybe if we have a 3rd we won’t find out! x #KCACOLS
