It’s important for children to learn from a young age that all people should be treated as equals, regardless of their differences. Exploring the different traditions and beliefs of other cultures is a great way to cultivate respect, as it will allow them to understand on some level why other people are the way they are. I have teamed up with a private school in Beaconsfield to offer you some tips.
Explore a World Map
If you don’t have a world map or globe to hand, have a look for one online and talk about the different countries with your child. Explain that the world is full of different types of people, who speak different languages, have different skin colours, celebrate unique cultural events, and have their own religious beliefs. This should help your child understand that their place in the world is tiny when compared with what’s out there.
Mark Cultural Occasions
With your child, grab a calendar and jot down some of the upcoming cultural events, such as Diwali, Chinese New Year or Ramadan, to name but a few. It’s important for them to understand these events so that they can respect their peers who might be celebrating them. With that said, help them find out the origins of these events and how they are celebrated.
Explore Your Own Heritage
Teach your child about their own background and why you have certain beliefs or traditions within your family. Explore how you might do things differently to others, but that doesn’t mean you are any better than them. It’s important to home in on the message that all people are equals, despite their unique way of life.
Be a Good Role Model
If you want your child to respect others, you will need to lead by example. Embrace diversity and avoid making stereotypical assumptions about others. If your child asks you questions about other people, be sensitive and empathetic with your explanations.
