5 Tips for Making Bedtime Easier for Kids

While as adults we feel that there’s not enough hours in the day for us to get as much sleep as we’d like, or little ones often fight bedtime.

Although they’ll probably grow up to realise just how precious sleep is, that probably doesn’t help you much in the meantime.

Luckily, there are steps that you can take to make bedtime easier for your little ones. If your children put up a fuss when it comes to getting some shut eye, then check out our five fantastic tips to improve their bedtime.

1) Get into a Routine

Routine is one of the most important ways to make bedtime easier for your little ones.

Putting your children to bed at the same time each night will help their body clocks learn when it’s time to go to sleep and will make it easier to settle.

Similarly, having a daily routine will give them the sense of security that will make sleep easier, and if you start winding them down for bed with calming activities each evening, they’ll find it easier to settle.

2) Make Sleep a Priority

When you make sleep a priority for your whole family, your children will learn the importance of bedtime from an early age.Sleep is essential to our wellbeing, and it can directly affect our physical and mental health. Therefore, getting enough sleep yourself is not only important for giving you the energy you need to run around after your little ones, but it can help to reduce your feelings of stress.

3) Create a Comfortable Environment

Creating a bedroom that your child loves will help to encourage them to go to bed in the evenings. You want to make sure that they have a relaxing and comfortable environment that will help them unwind.

As they grow, they’ll need a bed that can accommodate them, so consider letting them have some input in the bed they choose. You’ll also want to ensure that they have a comfortable mattress to protect their backs. Experts such as those at Archers Sleep Centre can give you all the help and advice you need when choosing the perfect mattress for your little one.

4) Turn Off Electronics

Too much screen time before bed isn’t just bad for our children, but it’s bad for us too.

The blue light from screens can negatively impact our quality of sleep, leaving us feeling tired and run down the next day.

Try to eliminate screens from bedtime routines, and instead consider switching them out for a book.

5) Expend Daily Energy

Our little ones are full of energy, and using up some of this during the day can make it easier for them to get to sleep each night.

Get out and about, particularly on the weekends and school holidays. Ramblers have collated a wide range of information on local walking paths so you can find the perfect day out.
