Great book recommendations to read this Summer

I am always looking for book recommendations to read so I wanted to put together a few of the books that I have read this Spring (in hope that another blogger is doing exactly the same thing LOL!).Reading is my self care, my escapism. When I was younger I really loved an easy read chick lit books. Now I love a little more of a mix especially dark suspense filled thrillers. Here is a few book recommendations from the last few months – a little something for everyone.

All the lonely people – Mike Gayle.

This book is a really lovely heart warming story which I enjoyed so much. The main character is a 80 year old man Hubert. Whose daughter lives in Australia. During their weekly phone calls he paints a picture of the perfect retirement filled with fun plans and friendship. However Hubert is lying. Most weeks he barely goes anywhere or sees anyone.

So when his daughter announces she’s coming to visit, Hubert needs to make his fake life, real. All the lonely people is a beautiful book. It has a little twist which I wasn’t expecting. Also I felt a little sad with the ending, but overall I loved it. Definitely one to read.

Invisible Girl – Lisa Jewell

I have spoken about my love for Lisa Jewell many times before. If I need a book that will be a guaranteed good read I choose one by Lisa Jewell. This was so good, not my favourite but still a really good. The books follows the life of Saffrye Maddox who goes missing from her home. Everyone believes that a Man called Owen Pick, a teacher who has recently been suspended from his job is responsible.

The book is a little predictable I wasn’t shocked as much as I usually am by Lisa’s books. I didn’t like the characters much and I felt it got a little slow during the middle. However it definitely picked up by the end and I really enjoyed it.

The Midnight Library – Matt Haig

I have wanted to read The Midnight Library for a while now. It has such mixed reviews some people say it’s the best book ever others disagree. The book follows the life of Nora Seed. Nora is so full of regrets and unhappy with life that she decides to end it. She ends up in a place between life and death called The Midnight Library.  In this Midnight Library she gets to undo each of her regrets and see what her life could have been like.

Such a great concept for a book. We all have regrets and often wonder if we have made the right choices at times.  It is a book that will make you think about your own life and appreciate it a little more.

The Lies You Told – Harriet Tyce

After reading Blood Orange last year I couldn’t wait to read ‘The lies you told’. The book follows the life of Sadie who along with her daughter returns to the house she grew up in and hated. She also sends her daughter back to the school that she went to as a child and also despised. Faced with some very competitive Mums at the school gates and trying to reclaim her place in her old legal changes, this thriller will keep you hooked. I had no idea how this book would end and it turned out to have quite a twist at the end. It wasn’t as good as Blood Orange but well worth a read.

Where the Crawdads Sing – Deli Owens

Possibly the most talked about book of the year. I had this book for a while but really struggled to get past the first chapter. However after a few false starts I finally gave it a good go and I am so glad I did. It is a beautiful story, heartbreaking at times but absolutely stunning. One you definitely need to read. The story follows the character Kya Clark also known as the Marsh girl who lives alone in in the marshes. You can’t help but be a little mesmerised by Kya she is character you really feel drawn to. When a local man is found dead everyone accuses Kya. Will she be found guilty? Did she murder him? It really is a lovely read, a love story which will stay with you long after you have finished reading.
