Science is all around us, whether you’re in the car, the kitchen, or enjoying the sun in the garden. It’s an intrinsic part of life, which is why it’s important for parents to try and help their child find a love of science from a young age. Of course, this is easier said than done. A senior school in Middlesex have prepared the following tips for us.
Associate Science with Your Child’s Interests
Whatever your child’s interests are, it’s likely that you’ll be able to link them back to science in some way. Perhaps they love playing video games, in which you could talk to them about how electricity works. Or how coding is used to create the games. If they’re sporty, talk to them about what happens to their body when they engage in physical activity. An artistic child, on the other hand, might love to learn more about colour theory. If you can somehow associate science with your child’s interests, they are more likely to appreciate science.
Look for Opportunities to Explore Science
Perhaps you could ask your child to help you plant some seeds in the garden and teach them what’s involved in keeping a plant alive. Maybe next time you’re stuck in the house on a rainy Saturday, you could take a trip to a science museum instead. During bath time, you could take along some household items and help your child learn about sinking, floating, and absorption. Next time you’re topping up your car’s windscreen washer or oil. Call your child over so that they can take a look at the engine. There are lots of opportunities to explore and learn about science all around us. If only you choose to look for them.
Spend Time Outdoors
The natural world is full of opportunities to learn about science. From wildlife and their natural habitats to the origins of fossils. With the Easter holidays just around the corner, and summer not long after, try and look for opportunities to explore the great outdoors and help your child find a love of science. This will help ensure they continue to feel inspired, despite not being in school.
