How to help a child become resilient

I wanted to write some tips on how to help a child become resilient. Children will encounter a range of problems. Over time they will discover they need the ability to navigate them. Some issues can be more complex than others, but how they handle the situation and what they look to rectify are the key parts of being resilient to future problems. I have noticed over the past year that one of my girls has really struggled in certain situations. One occasion was when she didn’t get chosen for the football team. She was heartbroken and didn’t know how to deal with the situation. I knew I needed to help build her resilience.

Here are some tips on how to help a child become resilient

Encourage your child to help others

Helping around the home, or better yet volunteering, gives your child a new perspective on how to engage with different people and learn how their needs are different. Children should engage in age-appropriate volunteering that allows them to practice their problem solving and critical thinking skills, allowing them to be more resilient in the future.

Talk to your child about self care

Something we often forget about is how to look after ourselves. Show your child how to teach them self care by encouraging them to eat regularly, take regular breaks and sleep at the right times each night.

Your child should also be encouraged to take breaks for themselves. Make sure they have spare time to enjoy activities they want to take part in, or hobbies they enjoy.

Show your child to keep things in perspective

Your child might think one way, but you might think another way. Give them the option to open their eyes and see what ways they can tackle a situation. They’re more likely to see how things can change with a lot of different opinions and perspectives often found in TV shows, video games and in their favourite stories.

Encourage a positive outlook

Staying positive is so important for helping your child become more resilient. Encouraging them to see the good things that they have going on. My girls both complete a positive diary every night to help them appreciate and remember good parts of the day.

These can give them the tools to learn about how to approach situations and what can make them more resilient in the future.
