Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child at Home

TEM is a popular term in education and refers to all subjects that fall under the umbrella of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths. Children would certainly benefit from exploring these types of subjects at home, so its important for parents tSo try and find ways they can help. This will give them a head start in their education and potentially help them find something they’re passionate about and want to do as a future career. Here are some tips from an independent school in London on how you can explore STEM subjects at home.

Gardening

Encourage your child to help you out in the garden so that they can learn more about plants and wildlife. Perhaps they could start growing their own vegetable patch as this will help them understand what’s required when keeping a plant alive. Teach them the names of different trees and shrubs and discuss how everything in the garden changes with each season.

Baking/Cooking

Preparing food is a great opportunity to explore STEM, because it involves measuring and calculating oven times. It also involves elements of science because your child will learn how ingredients change consistency or colour when mixed together, and how food changes when its put in the oven.

Board Games

There are lots of board games out there that can help children with their numeracy skills, such as Monopoly and Snakes & Ladders.

Water Play

Water play is particularly beneficial for younger children. Next time they take a bath, bring along some (safe) items so that they can learn about sinking and floating. It’s also an opportunity for you to teach your child the differences between absorbent and waterproof items. Even when you pull the plug and let the water drain away, it’s a chance for your child to learn, because you can talk about where the water goes.

Vehicles

Try and find opportunities to talk to your children about different vehicles and how they work. Pop the bonnet of your car and show them the different parts and what they do. You can also talk to them about the impacts of fuel on the environment.

The chances are, you’re probably exploring STEM with your child without even realising it, because it’s all around us.
