Exploring Mindfulness with Your Child

Exploring Mindfulness with Your Child

Mindfulness is a great technique to practice at any age. If you’re looking to build a level of resilience and confidence within your child then why don’t you explore mindfulness? It’s a great way of allowing your child to become one with themselves. Build upon their skills of reflection and also help them with skills critical to their development in school.

In this guide from this prep school in Hampshire, we take a look at the ways you can bring mindfulness into your child’s life.

After school each day, ask your child what they’re thankful for

Mindfulness isn’t just about the stereotypical process of meditation and deep breaths (though it is a part of it!). It’s also about taking stock and reminding yourself of the good things you have in your life. So, for children, get them into the habit of picking out one good thing from their day or one thing that they felt thankful for when they were at school or at home. Regular reflection will help keep your child feeling positive about their time both in and away from home.

There are plenty of videos online tailored to your child’s development in learning to meditate regularly. They’re designed to be short so that your child doesn’t get too distracted and become bored with the process. Over time this can be increased to really test your child’s ability to focus and build on their patience and discipline skills.

Practice breathing techniques

There are a number of different breathing techniques that can be used to help a child in their understanding of mindfulness, while also being able to control their stress. A popular one is deep breathing while your child holds their favourite teddy bear or cuddly toy. Holding one of their favourite things will train them to feel comfort when they need it the most.
