Everyone loves a good sporting event.
From Wimbledon to the World Cup, the Six Nations to the Olympics, sports can bring us together in a unique way. And weather permitting, we sometimes even get to enjoy a dose of sun alongside it – although we wouldn’t advise counting on that.
In the UK, there are some great locations for sporting fans to visit, and these top spots are brilliant places to take the sports fan in your life or visit yourself!
1. Redgrave-Pinsent Rowing Lake
Opened in 2006 and named for Olympic rowers Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent, the Redgrave Pinsent Lake is located in South Oxfordshire and designed as a training lake for rowers. The location has also played host to Olympic Trials for Team GB as recently as April 2022.
Development of the lake was a major collaborative project, receiving sponsorship from the Caversham Lakes Trust, Sport England, the Amateur Rowing Association as well as support from Ormiston Wire in key construction elements.
Oxfordshire is a great spot to visit for those who enjoy rowing events, and the lake itself has a number of scenic hiking and walking locations nearby.
2. National Football Museum
Located in central Manchester, just a stone’s throw from Victoria station, the National Football Museum is one of many great public exhibits in the city.
And for fans of the Great Game, there is plenty to enjoy. Their collection includes Pele’s World Cup Winner’s Medal, the ball from the 1966 World Cup Final, and the shirt worn by Diego Maradona during the iconic ‘Hand of God’ match.
Fans can explore the museum’s four floors as they please or enjoy museum tours which take place three times a day, as well as a range of activities which are great for kids.
3.Twickenham Stadium Tour
There are countless fantastic stadium tours in the UK to choose from, but Twickenham is undoubtedly amongst the best.
The home of rugby in England, fans can enjoy tours all year round where they can view the Royal Box, the Players’ Tunnel and the World Rugby Museum.
The London stadium even doubles as a music venue, with Lady Gaga, REM, Metallica and The Rolling Stones all having played there previously.
4. 2022 Snooker World Championships
This year’s Snooker World Championships will be taking place at the York Barbican, and as well as the chance to see a world tournament live, it also gives visitors the chance to experience one of the country’s most underrated cities.
Tickets for finals have sold out, but there are still many available for early events, and visitors will find plenty to do in York if you’d like to make a longer stay out of your adventure.
