How to Be More Involved in Your Child’s Education

Did you know that parents can help their children to develop a true love of learning simply by showing an interest in school work and becoming more involved in you child’s education?

It is important to show your child that you care about their education and that you are proud of their achievements. The more supported a child feels at home, the better they will perform at school.

Here is some great advice for parents from Manor Lodge School on how to get more involved in your child’s education and help to boost their performance…

Create a study area for your child

If they have exams coming up, help them to make a study schedule. This will also help to develop your child’s organisation and time management skills.

When helping with homework, try to give your child helpful feedback instead of criticism.

This means helping your child to think about why and how they got to their answer.

Try not to set your expectations too high

Allow your child to develop at their own pace. By putting too much pressure on children you can negatively affect their academic performance and cause stress.

Get to know your child’s teachers

Try to be a part of the school community. This will show your child how much you care about their education.

Encourage your child to ask questions

Ensure that they talk to you about interesting things they have learnt at school. Repeating what they have learnt in class will help to store the information in their memory and motivate your child to listen to the teacher.

Support your child’s literacy skills

Regularly reading with them. Find out what they have been reading in class or ask if they have any school books at home that you can read together.

Help to develop a love of learning

Demonstrate that learning can happen anywhere, not just in the classroom. This can be achieved by teaching them about the wildlife in the garden or at a local park.

In your free time

plan family days out to interesting places like a museum or art galleries. Your child can then share what they have learnt with their class when they return to school.
