Following some fashion rules

I am starting the year with some fashion rules. It’s hard to believe these days but I used to have a real interest in fashion. In fact, it was a passion of mine. I used to know all the current and upcoming trends, I used to be daring with what I wore and I also had clear ideas of what looked good one me.

Three children later and I have definitely lost my way. This is due to lots of factors, including having less money to spend on myself. Not having the time to trawl through fashion magazines examining what’s on trend. Also Saturday shopping days being a distant past. I also have to admit that some days, especially the last few months, I just haven’t cared about my appearance or what I look like. Now this is the one that really bothers me. I should care because it’s always been important to me. Now I can’t change the lack of money or the time restrictions (unless I have a little lottery win!) but I can change my mindset. I can and should still take pride in my appearance.

Self care is so important. As soon as we lose that, well I guess we lose ourselves a little. So I have spent the first couple of months this year reassessing my wardrobe and I have set myself a few little rules for the year ahead:

Fashion Rules 1

It’s ok to wear jeans the majority of the time.

I feel comfortable and confident in them and also I am constantly running around looking after little ones. Jeans just work for me. However, it’s not ok to wear the old, grease stained, faded jeans. I have sorted through all of the jeans I own and got rid of a lot and it was very much needed!

Fashion Rules 2

Wear clothes appropriately.

I get fed up wearing the same stuff all the time. The same big parker coat for winter, the same flat boots because they’re comfortable. I find myself stuck in a style rut and feeling a mess. However, I now know that I just need to dress for the occasion. Obviously, if I’m going on an adventure for the day at a National Trust then a big warm jacket and boots are required. Yet, if I’m going for a potter around the shops I can wear my leather biker jacket and my heels or if I am popping to the park and then a cafe I can maybe wear some trainers and chunky cardigan. I have been doing this a little more this month and I have noticed the difference.

Fashion Rules 3

Be organised.

Gosh, I feel like I write that I need to be organised a lot. Although it is true, I need to get my outfits ready the night before, I hate doing this. I like to get up and wear what I feel like wearing that day. However, I know I don’t have the time in the morning to even think about what I want to wear, never mind find and iron it. This then results in me throwing anything on and feeling a mess for the rest of the day!

Fashion Rules 4

Buy new underwear

This was one of the first things I have done in 2018 and it was needed. Seriously, all my bra’s were years old and offered no support at all. I have treated myself to some nice new underwear and I feel better for it.

Fashion Rules 5

If I need something new, buy it.

Seriously, I am terrible for buying myself new clothes. I use the excuse that I have no money or the kids need new clothes before me (which is so not true). This year, if I need something and it’s not going to break the bank, then I am going to buy it. If it boosts my confidence or makes me feel a little better about myself then it’s money well spent.

Fashion Rules 6

Accessorise More.

Accessories can make a whole outfit. A chunky necklace, a quirky bag or some unique earring can really make a difference to you look. However it is something that I struggle with. This year I am determined to make more effort and accessorise my outfits. I’d even like to try and make my own with the help of Maddisons of Durham who have a wide selection of jewellery making tools and enamelling supplies from brands like wg ball to choose from.

So, a few little rules that I have already started and I have already noticed the difference. I need to look after myself a little more and take those important steps to feel more like my old self again and not just a Mum of three.

  1. Sounds like you’re taking some great steps to where you want to be. My rut is more about not getting on and losing weight. So that’s what I need to get in gear.

  2. It’s easy to forget about yourself when you have a family to look after so I think your post is great.

I’m past that stage but as i’ve recently retired I’m having to rediscover a new weekday wardrobe as I’m no longer going into the office everyday ☺️

  3. I think a lot of it is how you feel. If you feel good in what you wear, it tends to look good. If you feel a shambles, you could be in the best dress ever and still look a bit run down….#KCACOLS

  4. I’m very guilty of neglecting myself, I’ve put on weight since having children and I just don’t feel as good as I used to. I really need to make the effort. Thanks for the inspiration. #KCACOLS

  5. Great tips and my mummy often finds herself in a style rut then buys loads of clothes and feels guilty! Can’t win! Good luck with your style transformation x #FamilyFunLinky x

  6. I’m definitely guilty of wearing the same things day in and day out and not moderating. I’m always on the go so tend to wear for the most comfortable or relaxed activity! I’m trying to be more aware of that as I have some lovely things, I just don’t bother with them. Self care a definite theme for me this year. #MG

  7. Oh my goodness my underwear is embarrassing, I really need to invest in some new ones. I definitely have a mum uniform and I need to break free of it more. Hopefully when spring arrives I will get braver! Thank you for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

  8. Oh I agree! Self care is soooo important so why do we put ourselves last? I’m off to buy new underwear 🌸 #familyfun

  9. When I had Aspen it totally became about her and what she was wearing, I spent all spare money on her adorable outfits and somewhere along the line after baby 3 I think I lost a little of me, and didn’t even know my style anymore. It took a while to find me again and feel like I deserved time and new clothes. I totally agree with buying new underwear too, it makes a huge difference to feel beautiful under your clothes too. Thanks heaps for linking up xx #mg

  10. I am definitely guilty of wearing the same things all the time. I get all my outfits ready when I do all the school and work uniform ironing so I can just get up, pick something and get ready. But like you I do stick to the same thing a lot. Thanks os much for linking to #KCACOLS. Hope you can come back again next time.

  11. I’m definitely in a style rut and am trying hard to move away from hoodies every day. New underwear definitely has a huge impact because it instantly makes you feel better and want to dress better.
Thank you for joining #FamilyFunLinky x

  12. I totally relate to this, I used to have an amazing wardrobe and love to experiment with fashion. Now I live in jeans or my dressing gown! #sharingthebloglove

  13. I am pretty much a dumb male. I have no fashion sense. The idea of buying new underwear is something that I need to follow. Thanks for the reminder. #DreamTeam

  14. New underwear is crucial, I just stocked up on things because I couldn’t believe how long it had been since I had replaced anything. It does make a difference. #DreamTeam
