Lazy nights in with Cinema Paradiso

I am the first to admit that we are a family of film buffs, especially my husband and Meme. We don’t watch a lot of television but we do love a good film.

We have been LoveFilm subscribers for quite some time as we loved the wide selection available and my husband is obsessed with the picture and sound quality provided by Blu-ray that just isn’t currently matched by streaming services (yawn!). We were therefore disappointed when we learnt of LoveFilm’s closure.

So when we got the opportunity to review Cinema Paradiso we jumped at the chance. We were super happy with the service from Love Film so we were intrigued as to whether Cinema Paradiso could be a viable alternative.

If you haven’t heard of Cinema Paradiso (or LoveFilm) before it is an online dvd/blu-ray rental service. The idea is once you’ve set up an account you compile a wish list from the vast collection of dvd’s and/or blu-rays available. Discs are then sent out to you from the wish list in line with the subscription package chosen.

I was pleasantly surprised by the collection available, I didn’t think it would be on par with LoveFilm but, for us, it certainly seems to be. There is a good mix of new releases as well as some older favourites.

As instructed, I put together some of my must see films on my wish list and the very next day I received an email to say 2 of my films have been dispatched. The following day they appeared in my letterbox just in time for the weekend. I couldn’t fault the service, there was plenty of communication ensuring I knew what films I was going to receive and when.

A great thing about this service is that you can choose what package suits you – all priced differently. You can choose to receive different amounts of discs each month. The cheapest package is £4.98 which allows 1 disc at a time and twice a month. However, the most popular package costs £9.95, which allows 2 discs at a time and 6 a month. I think this one is ideal for families as you can receive a family friendly disc to watch with the little ones and then more of a thriller for once they are in bed. For those super hardcore about their films, there are even options for unlimited monthly rentals!

Delivery is free and once they’ve been watched they just slip back into the prepaid envelope provided and you pop them in the post box with no stamp required – it’s as simple as that. Most importantly, there are no due dates, you can keep the discs as long as you need so, for busy parents like me, this is perfect – no stress or obligations.

If you were previously a LoveFilm subscriber and are disappointed by the closure on Halloween, definitely give Cinema Paridiso a try, it really does appear to be a great alternative that is pretty much a like for like replacement. The only negative that I can see is that there doesn’t currently appear to be an app, hopefully that will change soon.

So, if you have read this post and are still not sure, then all I can say is try it out for yourself. Cinema Paridiso offer a free 14 day trial, I can promise that once you try it you will be hooked!

  1. I’ve not heard of this service before. We love Netflix’s and are lucky that we have good internet to stream. But I know that this isn’t the case for everyone and this would be a great option for them!

  2. Ohh a free trial, nice. I might just have to give it a go. We used to be LoveFilm members too but stopped when we moved and got Netflix, I hadn’t noticed about the equality difference, I bet I will now I know! lol Mich x
