Young Love – The Ordinary Moments

Young Love – The Ordinary Moments

I remember the exact time I got the call, it was mid July, I was on holiday in Rhodes and had just got engaged to my husband to be.  It was lunchtime and me and hubbie were heading to a restaurant for some lunch when my good friend Jen called to tell me she was pregnant, we were both so surprised, it was completely unexpected. Nine months later she gave birth to a lovely little boy C. At this point I was 3 months pregnant with my own little surprise, Meme.

Me and Jen have been friends since we were 14 and had dipped in and out of each others life ever since. We went through stages of being really close, then not seeing each other much during the University years and then, with a chance meeting one afternoon, we ended working together and seeing each other every day.  It was therefore inevitable that C and Meme were going to be close.

They saw each other every week in their early years, going to baby groups, parks, museums, it was lovely watching them both grow and develop together and form a relationship. Meme has always been quite quiet especially when she was younger and usually needs time to warm up to people.  Not with C though, as soon as they got together they would be chattering and playing and pottering around.  This was our world for the first 4 years of Meme’s life.

It was really nice for me to experience this special time with my friend, both being first time Mums and obviously a little clueless at times trying to deal with sleepless nights, teething and tantrums.  Both of us worked part time and were able to meet quite often, we created a bond that will always be there, it was time in my life that I will never forget.

Unfortunately, as time passes, things have to change and, although C was only 6 months older, he started school a year before Meme.  Our little weekly routine had to end and, when Meme started school in September, we saw C even less, which does make me sad, this little era has ended,  However, when we do all get together, it really is like they have never been apart – I hope their friendship will stand the test of time.  Even if they don’t see each other regularly, I think their relationship is strong enough to cancel out obstacles like busy schedules and geography, just like me and Jen.

  1. How lovely they’ve been friends for so long already and here’s hoping their friendship lasts for many years to come. I look at my eldest who’s 4 next month and wonder whether any of the friendships she has now will last – I hope so!

  2. Aw how lovely to have such a great friendship and no doubt they will both treasure it growing up, even if they don’t see that much of each other. It must have been great to have your friend to go through the parenting journey with. xx

  3. There something so brilliant about a good friend having children of a similar age, almost like non related cousins. Great playmates ready made and so much mummy gossip too. Such a shame that school gets in the way but hopefully it won’t stop them growing up as great buddies! x
