Eco Week – The Ordinary Moments

Eco Week – The Ordinary Moments

A nice short week for us all, and whilst it is not the end of term for us just yet ( we still have another week to go), we can all see the light at the end of the tunnel. For me this term has flew by, I felt the first term was painfully slow and hard going and, although this term we have all been plagued with sickness, it seems to have gone pretty fast. One term left to go and then Meme’s first year of school is all done, I can’t believe it. I know these school years are going to be over in a flash and the thought honestly brings a lump to my throat.

This week it was ‘Eco week’ in Meme’s school. Like a lot of schools (I’m sure) we seem to be constantly receiving letters regarding school activities or requesting money for one reason or another, inviting us to fayres or school events, the list goes on – there is always something. I am not the most organised and I do find myself rolling my eyes when another letter arrives.

However,  Eco week was a great success. The Children where encouraged to walk to school with their parents (if possible) to reduce their carbon footprint. They also participated in a sponsored walk for World Water Day. Each child had to take a bucket to school which was then filled with water, they then had to walk a set course in the school grounds, to simulate how children in the developing world would need to do this daily in order to collect water and to find a safe place to go to the toilet.

Something me and my husband often talk about is how we can teach the girls about being grateful for what they have and ensuring they have an understanding that there is poverty in the world and not all children are as lucky as they are – to appreciate things we all take for granted. This exercise in school was perfect, you can tell a child that other children have to walk with a heavy bucket to access clean water or you can make them do it themselves, there is no better way for them to comprehend. It definitely worked for us, Meme has not stopped talking about it telling me about the poor children in the World. She has even spoke about saving some money to give to people worse off than us.

I have at times questioned my decision about if this school was the right one for her. I feel like I have often spoke about her school in a negative light but I honestly cannot fault the teaching methods. It is so interactive which is brilliant and one of the reasons we chose the school. We often have to send in a prop of some sort to aid with their learning which I feel, in Meme’s case, definitely helps.

I think (I hope) this term we have all found our feet…and we are all feeling a little happier about our school life.

  1. What a brilliant activity and it sounds like a lovely school! I would much rather my children be taught empathy than phonics if I’m honest, especially at this young age so it sounds perfect to me. I’m glad you’re settling into school life, it’s something I’m really worried about at the moment that’s looming on the horrizon for us come September so it’s good to hear things are going well for you

  2. It sounds like a great school and a really interesting topic to cover. I know what you mean, I think the school years are going to pass by so quickly. I can’t believe Mads has nearly finished her first year too. It makes me feel really emotional. x

  3. What a brilliant way to bring a lesson to life – you always remember more from doing than just from hearing about it don’t you!

  4. Wow what a great idea, its fab for kids to understand what happens outside of their little bubble and by being interactive it really helps the process! I’m glad you feel like you’re all settling in now and it’s crazy how fast the time goes x
